The Transformation Review is a new journal founded by poet-translators devoted to the art and craft of poetry in translation.

We believe this genre of work deserves a dedicated home rather than fighting for space in journals covering a wide range of literature. As poet-translators ourselves, we also believe your work deserves a quick response—we aim to reply within two weeks, often sooner.

What we're looking for:

We are interested in reviews of and essays about English translations of poetry from any language, and welcome reviews of both recent publications and older, overlooked translations.

Short Reviews (800-1200 words): Have you read a collection of poetry in translation you love or admire? Tell us about its images, poetics, rhythms. Entice us and others to read it too.

Longer Reviews (1200-2500 words): Dive more deeply into the esprit of a collection, its mechanisms, challenges, obsessions, delights. We love extended discussions of a work’s merits.

Essays on translation (1500-4000 words): We welcome explorations of the art and craft of translation itself. This might include reflections on translating particular poets or works, examinations of different translation approaches, discussions of theoretical or practical challenges, or considerations of what constitutes fidelity or success in translation. Or a comparison/contrast of different translations of the same text. Or a discussion of two or more collections by the same author.

We’re interested and curious and want to read excellent writing on translation. We’re open to innovative approaches and value both scholarly and personal perspectives.

Note: At this time we are not looking for poems just reviews and essays on poetry in translation.

We will be publishing reviews and essays on a rolling basis on the site and the first journal issue will appear both online and as a downloadable PDF when we have a sufficient body of accepted material.
